Assessment

Assessment system

Learners are assessed through two components:

  1. Continuous Assessment  (60%)
Learners are evaluated during the semester through assignments, project papers, and other practical sessions.
  2. Examination (40%)
These refer to the end of semester examination.

Not all of these assessment methods are applicable to all courses. It depends on the requirements of each course. For more details, refer to the course guide in the print module.

Academic Grades

Assessment in the MSE program is based on the most popular grading system of the United States: the GPA (grade-point average) system in combination with letter grades.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

First determine your grade points earned in each course by multiplying course credits by the appropriate grade-point equivalents (see table above). Then add the grade points earned in each course to calculate the semester total. Finally divide this sum by the number of credits taken to determine the semester/session GPA.

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

A student's CGPA is the weighted mean value of all grade points he/she earned by enrollment in MSE courses. To be awarded an MSE degree, learners must strive to achieve a CGPA of 3.00 in the last semester of study. Learners can repeat the course to improve the grade and the better grade will be recalculated in the CGPA. A learner who attains a Warning Status (less than 3.00 but more than 2.25) in the 1st semester must redeem that status by gaining a CGPA of 3.00 in the subsequent semester, failing which the learner will be in the Probation Status. Failed Exams can be repeated.

Example: How to calculate GPA & CGPA?

Grade Point Average (GPA) = 3.33 + 2.33 + 3.67 divided by 3 = 3.11

GPA Results: Pass

Grade Point Average (GPA) = 3.33 + 3.67 + 4.00 + 4.00 divided by 4 = 3.75

GPA Results: Good

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) = 3.11 + 3.75 divided by 2 = 3.43

CGPA after two semesters: Good
